Why
Kenya?
When introduced to Kingdom Driven Ministries,
you might fairly ask, “why Kenya?” After all, Kenya is reportedly 80% Christian—that is more than the US! So WHY
would someone consider missions to Kenya to be so important?
While it may be true that 80% of Kenyans are reportedly
Christian, it is also true that only 7% attend church. Hmmm. You can see a discrepancy here. Let me
explain where that comes from. For starters, in order to obtain government credentials (such as a passport), a
Kenyan citizen must produce a baptismal certificate. That might sound odd to citizens of the West, but that is
how it is in Kenya. A baptismal certificate is quite easy to obtain, and the records are filed with the
government. The result? A VERY exaggerated claim of the number of Christians in the country.
Also, the Christianity we have mostly observed is simply a
cultural phenomenon. Your name is either Mohamed or Paul (or David or Peter…)—this identifies you
as either Muslim or Christian (culturally, that is), but this does not mean that you are a bona
fide follower of Jesus Christ. Last but not least, Kenyans (though they would naturally understand Eastern
practices and concepts far better than Western) have been exported a Western model of
Christianity. This has proven very ineffective at producing multi-generational, obedient followers of
Christ. Kingdom Driven sets out to reverse this trend, one disciple at a time.
With all that said, Kenya is NOT the end game! Kenya is a
strategic home base in the East African region. Kingdom Driven Ministres (and the Carrier family)
have set up shop in Kenya because it allows for a stable platform from which to launch inter-Africa
missions.
Kenya is just the beginning. We start with the Swahili speakers.
With just one language, we can reach into Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Madagascar, Mozambique, Central
African Republic, Malawi, and Somalia. Many in the Democratic Republic of Congo also speak Swahili. So with just
one language beyond English, we can reach out to over 10 additional countries! See the following map:
But it does not stop there.
The next language (Marc's first language as a child) is French.
With French, we can reach Rwanda, Burundi, Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and much of West
Africa! We are then able to reach MANY people in many African countries, having only learned three
languages! That is “why Kenya.”
Our Kingdom expansion resources (Keys to Kingdom Expansion, The
Gospel According to Jesus, The Church in the House, and Shepherd’s Storybook) have ALL already been
translated in Swahili and are breaking new ground through our partners on the ground, even now, all over East
Africa. French translation will soon follow!
